Review Of The Rare Backpack Mustang Cobra

The Mustang I am about to write this article about is one that for sure deserves mentioning on this site. It's a Mustang that you couldn't find on the pegs, at a Convention, in a multipack, or even the Red Line Club. It's rarely seen online and when one does sell, it usually fetches between $150 to $220. Matter fact, the last one that was found online sold on The Toy Peddler (www.thetoypeddler.com) for $220. That was just a month or so ago! This Mustang was found in a backpack that featured three other Hot Wheels/Corgi Castings. The actual backpack is pictured below and the Mustang is the very first car on the left.

This backpack was reported found at several airport gift shops, cruise ship gift shops, and specialty stores. I have never heard of it being found in any big box stores like Wal-Mart or Target. With that said, let's move on and focus on the Mustang that came in this backpack.

The Mustang that came with this backpack is called the Mustang Cobra. I'm going to share a little history about this casting and how exactly it came around.

Mettoys, which was a diecast company located over in the UK, which owned Corgi Toys. They were bought out by Mattel in 1989, and they had this Mustang casting, known as the Mustang Cobra. The actual name of the Mustang was the '79 Mustang Turbo Cobra. This casting was first released under the Hot Wheels name in the FAO Schwarz Series 3 set. Mattel released it in the Hot Wheels lineup in 1996. They released this Mustang with a hard to find five spoke wheel variation that is known to most in the hobby as the Corgi casting. With that said, the Mustang that this article is referring to is also a Corgi Casting Mustang Cobra.

Now let's move on and take a closer look at this very rare Mustang......

As you can see, it does have the five spokes, which look very nice on it! It also has an opening hatchback that is very cool! It does lack having a back window but that doesn't take away from the casting at all. It even has a trailer hitch on it!

As of today, this is a casting that no longer is found in any of the newer Hot Wheels coming out. This is a Mustang casting that for sure will always be a hit with Mustang collectors, as it resembles the Fox body style from the '80's and early '90's.

Thanks for checking out this article and I hope you enjoyed reading about the history on a very cool Mustang casting. Stay tuned as I will be doing another article soon on a Mustang, that was only found internationally!
