“The Travels of Mustang Sally” ……… by Scott Moen
My name is Scott Moen and I am a “Mustang-aholic”. It’s been 12.821 days since my FIRST
Mustang die-cast purchase. But this story is not about me so much as it is about the travels
of a Hot Wheels 1965 Mustang Fastback known as Mustang Sally.
Sally was born in Malaysia to a very large family. Like many of her siblings, Sally decided at an
early age she wanted to leave home and see the world. And that is exactly what she did. She
left home and eventually ended up in Singapore, and this is where the story begins.
Like Sally, I have a number of siblings, two brothers to be exact. My youngest brother, Steve
lives in Geneva Switzerland with his wife, son and daughter. He is a great brother and a smart
one too. He’s a Harvard graduate who works for the United Nations. His job at the United
Nations takes him all over the world, especially the Far East.
Early one morning, I was at my computer checking out what was happening on HWC.com when my
brother messaged me. He was on a business trip and had a nine hour layover at the Singapore
Changi Airport. As we messaged back and forth, he told me that he was walking around in one
of the many gift shops there. I jokingly asked him to look for any Hot Wheels Mustangs that
might be for sale. To my surprise, he found a baby blue 1965 Mustang fastback, aka ... Mustang
Sally. He purchased Sally for $ 3.65 and told me that he’d bring her back to the USA the next
time he was home for a visit.
As Steve and I talked, I asked him where he was headed. He informed me that his final
destination was Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia. But before he got there, he had
another layover in Beijing China and then it was off to Mongolia. An idea started forming in my
mind after hearing this. Seeing as Sally would be making the trip with him, I asked if he would
be willing to take some pictures of Sally in the different countries that he stopped in? Now
most people would think this was a crazy idea, but seeing as he knows how obsessed I am with
Mustangs, he said he’d be happy to do it.
So the first stop after Singapore was the Beijing Capital International Airport. Steve only had a
short layover so he didn’t leave the airport terminal. But he did manage to find a nice location to
photograph Sally. (Picture 1)
From Beijing, it was onto Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia. Luckily Steve had a chance
to see some of the sights in the city. One of them was a monument to Genghis-Khan. Steve’s
guide was nice enough to take a picture of Steve and Sally in front of the monument. (Pictures
2 & 3) I have to wonder if Hot Wheels are even sold in Mongolia. It’s possible that this was
the only Hot Wheels Mustang in the country.
With his work done in Mongolia, Steve and Sally headed home. From Mongolia, it was back to
Beijing. From Beijing, they flew to the Helsinki Airport in Helsinki Finland. Steve only had a
moment to snap a picture as he transferred planes. (Picture 4)
From Finland, it was back home to Geneva Switzerland. Steve had been gone a total of eleven
days. And as tired as he was, he still stopped to take a picture of Sally and the beautiful view
of the lake and mountains in Geneva. (Picture 5)
Sally sure had logged a lot of miles in those eleven days. But her travels were not done yet.
A few days after Steve returned home, he traveled to Cyprus, an island nation in the
Mediterranean Sea, and Sally went along for the trip. Upon arrival at the Larnaca
International Airport, Steve showed Sally where the cars park. (Picture 6) Then it was onto
the hotel in Nicosia where Sally took in the local scenery. (Picture 7)
Once Steve’s business was done, it was back to Switzerland where Sally would take a well-
deserved rest before heading to the USA. Sally’s final destination is Oconomowoc, Wisconsin
where Steve, Sally, and I posed for a picture. (Picture 8)
And there you have it, the travels of Mustang Sally. She might have a lot of miles on her, but
she will always be a cherished addition to my Mustang collection. I can’t tell you how much it
meant to me that my brother would do this. I really have a GREAT brother.
